A civic media organisation shaping African and diaspora narratives across the UK and beyond

Operating across radio, digital and broadcast media to expand representation, access and public dialogue.

African Voices Platform is a UK-based civic media organisation working at the intersection of broadcasting, storytelling and public discourse. Through its DAB radio station, digital platforms and broadcast collaborations, it produces and distributes content that centres African and diaspora perspectives within the UK’s media landscape.

How the work operates

Broadcasting
African Voices Platform operates a DAB-licensed radio station serving South Yorkshire and beyond, creating space for African and diaspora voices within the UK’s broadcast landscape. Through live programming, interviews and curated shows, it contributes to a more representative public discourse.

Digital and Editorial
Across its digital platforms, African Voices Platform produces written, audio and visual content that documents, reflects and extends conversations within African and diaspora communities.

Partnerships and Public Dialogue
African Voices Platform works with cultural institutions, civic organisations and community partners to convene conversations, document work and support more inclusive forms of storytelling. This includes collaborations across arts, culture and public life, both within Sheffield and nationally.

African Voices Platform is part of the ongoing work of building a more representative media system.

Selected work and collaborations

Institutional and Civic Engagement
African Voices Platform operates within civic, academic and policy-facing spaces to document and extend public conversations.

Supporting the livestream and documentation of President Hakainde Hichilema’s address at the University of Oxford, in partnership with the Zambia Oxford and Cambridge Alumni Network, contributing to the circulation of a national moment within diaspora and international audiences.

The platform has also served as a media partner for the Africa Leadership Summit London 2025, contributing to the documentation and distribution of high-level conversations on African leadership and governance, including convenings featuring figures such as former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.

Cultural and Intellectual Collaborations
African Voices Platform works with theatres, arts organisations and cultural producers to frame, document and extend the life of creative and intellectual work.

This work has seen collaborations with Utopia Theatre, supporting coverage and public dialogue around productions such as Crown of Blood, and hosting and curating a public symposium with Professor Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o in partnership with the Racial Justice Network, contributing to critical discourse on language, decolonisation and African intellectual traditions.

Broadcast and Public Conversations
Through its DAB-licensed radio station and digital platforms, African Voices Platform hosts in-depth conversations with artists, practitioners, policymakers and community leaders.

These conversations foreground perspectives that are often underrepresented or misrepresented within mainstream media, contributing to a more inclusive and representative public discourse.

Civic and Community Work
The platform contributes to civic and community initiatives that centre storytelling as a form of participation and engagement.

This includes youth-focused programmes, workshops and partnerships that support emerging voices and build pathways into media, storytelling and public life.
