Guinea’s Justice Minister, Alfonso Charles Wright has ordered judges in Conakry and Kankan to start the prosecution process against former President Alpha Conde and many of his former ministers on public embezzlement and corruption charges.

On Thursday 3rd November 2022, Wright released a list of 180 individuals which included former Prime Minister Dr. Ibrahim Kasory Forfana, former Defence Minister Dr. Mohamed Janneh, former Security Minister Dr Albert Damantan Camara and several others who had held government posts during Mr Conde’s 11 year rule. They are all accused of stealing public money for their own benefit.

The first ever UK-Francophone West and Central Africa Trade and Investment Forum was held in London on Wednesday, 19th October, 2022. Organisers described the event as a huge success with hundreds of delegates and business leaders in attendance and deals worth nearly £200 million pounds were announced. The event’s aim was to show UK investors that Francophone Africa is open for business and showcase the wealth of opportunities available in many French speaking African countries.

The long awaited trial of those thought to be responsible for the killings and raping of more than 150 people at Guinea’s national stadium during a political protest began on Tuesday 28th September 2022.

Sierra Leone’s Police have confirmed that 25 people were killed on Wednesday 10th August after violent protests erupted in parts of the country including the capital, Freetown.

According to the force, six of their officers and 21 civilians were killed during the unrest in Freetown and the eastern part of the country in Makeni and Kamakwie. As investigations continue, the Police reports that it has arrested 130 people with further arrests expected in the coming days.

Guinea’s Front National for the Defence of the Constitution (FNDC) have organised a nation-wide protest for Thursday 23rd June. This will be the first protest since the junta took over and is supported by the two main opposition parties in the country. The junta has banned all sorts of protest.

President, Dr Julius Maada Bio has recently shared his government’s successes including measures put in place by his government to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Sierra Leone has recorded one of the lowest rates of confirmed COVID-19 cases and associated deaths in the world.

On March 13th, 2022, thousands of people, including Sierra Leone’s vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh and delegates from many West African countries including Guinea, Liberia, The Gambia, Tchad and Nigeria attended the coronation of Sierra Leone’s Western Fula tribal leader, Alhaji Mohamed Sajor Jalloh.
